I DISAGREE with John Tanner (The Issue, Oxford Mail, November 19)– I don’t think he has gone far enough in his negative thoughts on the forthcoming Royal wedding.
For a start how dare these “millionaire” – originally working class – Middletons have aspirations to better themselves and become “middle” class, the shame of it!
As for replacing the monarchy I think we have already had that put in motion.
In the 1970s David Frost was interviewing the then-president of the Yorkshire miners, Arthur Scargill, and asked him what he would do with the Queen if the monarchy were to be abolished?
He replied that she would have a job in Woolworths.
As Frost pointed out to him in his socialist state there would be no Woolworths – prophetic!
Let’s take it a stage further and abolish the House of Lords as much criticised by John Prescott and now eerrm, “Lord Prescott.”
Finally, if we were to replace the monarchy with an American-style presidency who else but Tony Blair to take the role as one who has done “so” much for this country’s reputation on the international scene by agreeing to invade Iraq and thereby radicalise people who then resorted to extremism.
We criticised the French at the time, but dare I say they were right and to this day no weapons of mass destruction have been found.
No, Mr Tanner, the monarchy is far from perfect but they can’t defend themselves and until someone comes up with something better let’s keep it.
I would imagine a lot of revenue will be generated from the amount of tourism especially from the US who adore the pomp and pageantry.
I for one will probably not be around for another future king’s wedding and, though ill-fated, who can forget the Prince of Wales’s marriage to Lady Diana Spencer?
So let’s get out the bunting and organise the street parties and blow the recession and the merchants of doom and gloom.
John Millington – brought up middle class and now working class and proud of it.
