I NOTED with interest Tuesday’s The Issue, debating the funding of schools’ sports partnership facing the axe.
Next to this article was a letter from Sian Renwick, of Oxford University, informing us of their support to the community of Oxford.
Maybe the university could, with their numerous sports grounds, facilities and experienced athletics students, help the schools.
I grew up in the 1950s (a most austere time). Parents and teachers formed parent-teacher groups, raising rather modest funds to aid sports activities. Some even built a small swimming pool.
I, too, remember Oxford University students helping out at youth clubs and boys’ clubs, eg, Worcester College Boys Club.
There appeared to be quite a community spirit in those days.
