THE plan to build student accommodation on the car park near Magdalen Bridge will be a travesty for St Clement’s and East Oxford.

Oxford City Council seems increasingly enamoured of helping investment adventurers for profit to the detriment of its citizenry. This council was elected to look after the interests of the people of Oxford but its powers seem more and more manipulated by pressurising agendas within and without council.

The proposed development in St Clement’s is a sop to privilege and property represented by Oxford University. There must be no more encroachments on to city land to the detriment of a vital and vibrant community that thrives on our side of Magdalen Bridge.

The car park is needed by local shops and businesses.

The plan appears motivated by profit and corporate greed and not by social need. The council has no mandate to sacrifice the needs of St Clement’s in the interests of quick financial gain.

And what of the council’s so-called development plan?

Are they selling off city-owned property to accommodate students while telling the rest of us that we cannot afford to build decent council homes for the rest of us?
