WHO remembers the Carfax Assembly Rooms in Oxford?

It was a favourite haunt for hundreds of young people keen to dance the night away.

Many a romance started and flourished or foundered on the floor of the Carfax.

The picture was sent in by Dennis Fogden, of Newland Street, Eynsham.

It dates from the 1960s and shows him, third from the left, and three friends to his left, Stan Hall, Brian Pether and Roy Young.

Stan and Roy were well-known pianists on the Oxford music scene.

Mr Fogden recalls: “The picture was taken in the downstairs restaurant – we often went there for a coffee.

“In the evenings, we enjoyed rock ‘n’ roll at the Carfax, the Town Hall or the Holyoake at Headington.”

Carfax Assembly Rooms, which were owned by the Oxford Co-operative Society, featured many up-and-coming groups.

Among them were The Beatles, who appeared there in their one and only Oxford concert in February 1963, before they became famous.

Sharing the stage as the support act were an Oxford group, the Madisons, who enjoyed a close-up view of a band that was about to hit the big time – and tuned up with John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Former Madison Neil Robinson, then a 21-year-old keyboard player, later recalled: “It was a sell-out. The word had just started to spread about The Beatles and there were girls standing up on tables around the room.

“They were screaming and shouting.”

One of the bands which often played at the Carfax was the Eric Tolley Orchestra.

Eric Tolley, of Didcot, was one of Oxfordshire’s top bandleaders, entertaining thousands of people in a long musical career.
