THE Morrell’s pub in the St Ebbe’s area of Oxford, with dozens of partygoers pictured outside was definitely the Duke of York - click on the link below to see the photograph.
Six readers called to identify the venue and to confirm that it was a Coronation party in 1953.
The picture, showing children sitting at tables and parents standing behind, came from a collection belonging to the late Kathleen Mabel Bennett and was sent in by her nephew, Steven Handscombe, of Cumnor Hill.
Among those in the picture were landlord Ted Sloper, Maureen Joynson, Maureen Taggart, Avis Tompkins, Ann Durham, Carol Durham, Mrs Weller, Mrs Fletcher, the Day sisters, Basil Tompkins, Jennifer Hickey, Elsie Taylor, Bobby Taylor, Dot Sloper, June Sloper, Cyril Spencer and Mrs Spencer.
As we recalled, Miss Bennett, who lived in St Ebbe’s, worked for the Oxford Mail before and after the Second World War.
During the war she worked for the National Fire Service in Oxford.
