THIS is the third and final section of a panoramic picture of pupils and staff at Headington Secondary School in Oxford in 1961.
Headmaster Cyril Eason was approaching the end of a successful career. The following year, when he retired, he was praised at his last school prize-giving. Alderman AB Brown, a member of Oxford City Council, told pupils and parents that the school – better known as Margaret Road School – was recognised throughout Oxford as a good school and the main reason for this was Mr Eason.
The picture comes from former pupil Jean Jeffs, of Sandford-on-Thames, whose maiden name was Robinson. She writes: “Unfortunately, I can’t remember all the teachers’ names, but I do recall Mrs Silcox (art), Mr Silcox (science) and Mr Poxon (English), who also managed the Oxfordshire boys’ rugby team.”
Mrs Jeffs recalls that she and a classmate, Jean Marriott, cooked sausage and mash for the rugby team and as a reward, Mr Poxon allowed them to travel with the team to Leicester. She tells me: “We didn’t see the match – I think we went shopping.”
Do you recognise yourself or anyone else in the picture, or have any memories of the school? Write and let me know.
