‘ENOUGH is enough’ – that’s the message from Wantage town councillors who fear government and council spending cuts could lead to more community facilities being lost.
Wantage Magistrates’ Court, the register office and Vale of White Horse District Council’s one-stop shop have all closed in recent years.
Now the town council has written a letter to the district council demanding reassurances that further services will not be lost.
The district rejected the town council’s claim.
High on the agenda will be the future of Wantage Civic Hall, which has been losing thousands of pounds each year.
Town councillor Patrick O’Leary, former mayor of Wantage, said: “Thousands of new homes are being planned for Wantage and Grove and we have been losing vital facilities. The town council has written to the Vale to say enough is enough.”
The letter has been sent to council chief executive David Buckle and calls for a meeting.
Vale council leader Tony de Vere said: “It’s not fair to suggest that Wantage gets a raw deal compared to Abingdon.
“We want to get the Civic Hall running as cost-effectively as possible.”
