The Other Family Joanna Trollope (Black Swan, £7.99) Some people hate her, but there are plenty of fans waiting for this paperback version of the master storyteller’s view of life, death and what happens when there are two families mourning a partner and father. Her characters may be a tad stereotypical, but all Trollope’s books tap into dilemmas many of us have experienced. In this one, Chrissie’s young adult children are faced with the death of their father — and with his other family in Newcastle.
Married With Baggage Elise Chidley (Orion, £6.99) Another modern family, with children struggling to adapt to change. Annie has fallen for widower Simon, but he comes with a seven-year-old daughter, Lydia, who doesn’t want a new mother. The problem is compounded when his company moves him to a small town in Connecticut. The office drama scenes as he fights to keep his job are completely over the top, but it all ends happily, so who cares?
