Monday’s Oxford Mail reported that hundreds of people welcomed the seven RAF men on their March for Honour, passing through Oxford to raise £1m along with the Army, Navy and Royal Marines for the British Legion Poppy Appeal, dedicated to those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. Advance coverage was given on local TV and twice by yourselves.
Being an ex-RAF regular, I was ready in Botley Road on Sunday morning, which was fully indicated as the route to be taken out of the city. The RAF contingent duly passed by right on time.
I was the only person in Botley Road to greet them. From Osney Bridge onwards, the road was deserted.
Considering each mile on this march was dedicate to those killed, why was I the only person present? Where were all the rest of you?
I suppose one word sums it up – apathy.
