MISS Oxfordshire will be among more than 100 people sleeping rough tomorrow to raise money for the city’s homeless population.
Alice Christian has signed up for the annual Oxford Sleep-Out, being held in St Clement’s churchyard.
And the 25-year-old actress said although there are some last minute nerves, she is looking forward to raising funds for a vital cause.
Also joining those sleeping out will be members of RAF Brize Norton’s Air Movement Squadron.
For 15 years the scheme has raised the profile of homelessness in the city and netted more than £200,000 for charity projects.
Miss Christian, who lives in London, said: “Apart from camping in my back garden when I was young, I’ve never done anything like this before.
“I’m quite nervous because it is November and it’s going to be very cold.
“But there will be lots of people there and it will be a great atmosphere.
“We will all be clutching our flasks of coffee to keep warm.
“And it is also for a really important cause, which will give us the motivation.”
The 2010 event was launched by Lord Mayor of Oxford John Goddard in September.
Last year, 106 people took part, braving a 3am downpour which left them soaked.
More than £16,000 was donated.
If the skies open on Saturday night, people taking part will be able to shelter in St Clements Church.
Groundsheets will be provided, along with tea, coffee, biscuits and toilets. Those taking part just need to bring a sleeping bag and warm clothes.
Victoria Mort, the 2010 co-ordinator, who volunteers for the Gatehouse shelter and charity Stepping Stones, said: “Members of companies and charitable organisations, students, church members and individuals have all been busy collecting sponsorship for the Sleep-Out, and getting ready to sleep out themselves.
“It’s a great opportunity to raise money for homeless people and also to raise awareness about homelessness.
“The trick is to get as much sponsorship as you can, and to get your sponsorship form stamped in the morning to prove you slept out.”
Those who don’t feel they can sleep out can pay £20 to sleep in their own bed on Saturday night. Donations for this should be sent to The Oxford Sleep Out, c/o Oxford Homeless Pathways, PO Box 177, Luther Street, Oxford, OX1 1SF.
