A POWER cut knocked out the computer servers of councils and businesses in Oxford city centre.
About 150 businesses were hit by the power cut at shortly before 8am yesterday, which Scottish and Southern Electricity (SSE) said was caused by a fault with an underground cable.
Shops in Cornmarket, St Aldate’s, St Ebbe’s and New Hall Inn Street were all without power as they prepared to open their doors to customers, although SSE spokesman Sam O’Connor said all but 13 properties had power again by 9am.Full supplies were restored by 10.40am.
Both Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council suffered problems with their IT systems as a result of the power cut.
Oxfordshire County Council’s website was out of service for parts of the morning, but spokesman Louisa Mendonca said all systems were running again by the afternoon.
At Oxford City Council, meetings went ahead, but some departments were left without access to their computer systems. Spokesman Louisa Dean said everything was back to normal by midday.
