OXFORDSHIRE health chiefs are urging women to be ‘breast aware’ during October.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the county’s primary care trust NHS Oxfordshire is encouraging women aged 50 to 70, who are eligible for free breast screening, to get themselves checked.

Each year in the county, 450 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed and about 120 people die from the disease.

But if it is caught early enough, more than 80 per cent of women diagnosed in the county will survive more than five years.

Dr Tom Porter, consultant in public health for NHS Oxfordshire said: “We encourage all women to be ‘breast aware’ and visit their GP if they notice any changes to their breasts.”

Women will receive an invitation to their first breast screening within the three years after their 50th birthday.
