Streets lined for fallen Gurkha
A Gurkha soldier killed in Afghanistan was honoured in Oxford today.
Veterans from the Royal British Legion lined Headley Way, in Headington, to pay tribute as the body of Rifleman Suraj Gurung arrived at the John Radcliffe Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Rfn Gurung, from the 1st Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles, died in a suicide bomb attack on Saturday while on foot patrol in Helmand Province. The 22-year-old was the 339th member of UK forces to be killed in Afghanistan since 2001.
Rfn Gurung’s body landed at RAF Lyneham and was driven through the nearby town of Wootton Bassett, where hundreds of Gurkhas lined the streets, before being brought to Oxford.
