Sir – Clearly with restricted funding for the delivery of Oxfordshire’s next Local Transport Plan there needs to be some better partnership working.
If the city council were to encourage the Northern Gateway development land to be used for car-free student accommodation then the predicted congestion wouldn’t happen or need costly transport schemes to deal with it. Fewer students might then live in East Oxford’s housing, freeing up accommodation for other people (and allowing poor Elizabeth Mills and others a reasonable night’s sleep).
Also rather than spend £16.8m on a new swimming pool in Blackbird Leys, why not use the money (if it really materialises) to plug the gaps that Richard Mann has identified in Oxford’s cycle network.
There would not only be the health benefits of swimming but air quality, safety and reduced congestion benefits too.
The county council might then have sufficient funding to be able to link other communities, such as Farmoor, to Oxford’s cycle network. Victoria Sowter, Oxford
