CHORISTERS at Abingdon’s St Helen’s Church are hitting all the right notes after winning a top award.
Four young singers from St Helen’s Church have achieved the Bishop’s Award in the Royal School of Church Music’s Voice for Life programme.
One of them, 12-year-old Jacob Thorn, has reached the final of BBC Radio 2’s Young Chorister of the Year competition.
He was selected from hundreds of entries to take part in the contest at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Friday, October 29.
A recording of the event will be broadcast on Radio 2 on Sunday, November 7.
The winners, a boy and a girl, will receive a trophy and lessons with one of Britain’s leading singing coaches.
Jacob, Rosie King, 17, Emma Shearer, 16, and Charles Pope, 15, all passed the RSCM exams to gain the Bishop’s Award, while 15-year-old Debbie King secured the Dean’s Award.
The exams tested their vocal skills and their knowledge of churches and choirs.
The town centre church’s choirmaster, Christopher Fletcher-Campbell said: “It’s a considerable achievement.”
