WE WERE very interested to read that Reg Hayes “the oldest Scouter” had finally retired from scouting at the age of 95 (Oxford Mail, September 28).
Prior to our marriage in 1953, I was cub leader of the 19th Oxford (Magdalen Road Mission Hall) group and first met Reg then. During the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s on our return to Oxford, my husband and I were Cub and group Scout leaders of the 16th Oxford (Collinwood Road) group as well as becoming ADC Cub and Scouts for Headington District.
We worked very closely with Reg when we had joint ventures with the other districts, Cowley, Headington and Isis at the scout camp at Youlbury.
Those were the good days!
We wish Reg continued good health and may he enjoy many more nights camping and sleeping under the stars. To all our friends and ex-colleagues in the Oxford district we wish you well. We are enjoying our retirement here in Cornwall but never forget our scouting days.
