Where there are large numbers of students, there will always be a certain amount of noise and disruption. Many of us will remember our own student days — and perhaps cringe at the thought of some of the things that we did.
It is clear, however, that in Oxford the trend on noise and disruption is getting steadily worse.
That may be down to increasing binge drinking fuelled by a relaxation in drinking hours and a toleration of the all-night party culture.
Whatever the cause, it cannot be right that it is now infringing so much on the lives of those who live in the same community as the students.
We applaud the actions of Brookes University in funding Police Community Support Officers to patrol the campus and surrounding areas. However, it has clearly not had any impact in the key early hours.
The University and the city council need to sit down together and work out an approach that will have an impact.
That could include looking at tighter licensing hours during the main working week and stricter enforcement of codes of conduct for students.
