THE family of a teenager who died in a car crash want to build a covered seating area for youngsters in his memory.

About £2,500 was donated to a fund set up in memory of Callum MacKinnon, 19, who died in an accident on the B4020 Shilton Road, between Burford and Carterton, on September 7.

His mother Jacki Hancock said she wanted seats to be installed in Carterton’s Alvescot Recreation Ground – at the back of the family’s home in Pinecroft.

Leftover cash will go to a yet-to-be-decided charity.

She said: “Callum was always moaning that there was never a place for teenagers to go. This will be somewhere they can all congregate.”

Callum, a keen footballer who played for Witney United under-18s and Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, died when the Citroën C3 he was the back seat passenger in crashed into a tree.

He was travelling home from work at the Burford Garden Company before going out to a football training session with Cirencester Town Football Club.

Janet Eustace, clerk of Carterton Town Council, which owns the recreation ground, said: “The council is very willing to consider any suggestions they might have, including something on the recreation ground.”

More than 500 of Callum’s friends turned out last Thursday for a memorial match in his honour. Mrs Hancock said she had been moved by the show of support from her son’s friends, describing them as “caring and compassionate”.

Callum was buried in his Oxford and Cherwell Valley College football kit. Mrs Hancock is now in discussion with Carterton Football Club over plans to name a six-a-side tournament every August after her son.
