The all-night dance event at Cassington last weekend has caused quite a stir. For people as far away as Osney Island to be kept awake throughout the night, the noise must have been excessive.
Environmental health officers at West Oxfordshire District Council say that all conditions were complied with. That would suggest that the conditions were not stringent enough.
Surely, the presumption must be against a loud, all-night event close to areas of large population.
The Cassington ‘rave’ was heard through North Oxford, Jericho and into West Oxford. That is an awful lot of people with a disturbed night.
Frustratingly for those affected, it turned out that the environmental health officers for Oxford were not those involved in giving permission.
The city’s environmental health officers will be seeking a meeting with the rave organisers following last weekend’s complaints. That is only right.
If a way cannot be found to ensure that the event does not disturb the sleep of those in North and West Oxford, it should never take place again.
