WE ARE getting more and more reports of speeding on our roads. Much concern has been expressed by the Road Safety Partnership, the AA and the public.
The county council is quoted (Oxford Mail, Sept 13) as saying that the speed cameras have been switched off because the Government cut its grant.
In fact, the grant was reduced by £300,000 and the council knocked a further £300,000 off its contribution to the Road Safety Partnership.
Had the council only reduced its contribution by the amount lost in grant, at least some of the cameras could have remained operational.
Let’s be clear about this; it’s the Conservative administration at County Hall that is responsible for the camera switch-off in our region, and for any consequent speeding and increase in accidents.
JEAN FOOKS, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition Oxfordshire County Council, County Hall, Oxford
