Instead of answering the criticisms in my letter about the county council raising charges for parking permits, the county council supremo Keith Mitchell (Oxford Mail, September 21) merely suggests that I should stand for election to the city or county council.
I might do so, were I not a pensioner with some disabilities which make it difficult for me to get about much or to stand for long periods – let alone to stand for election.
My disabilities are one reason why I continually criticise the county council for its restrictive policies on traffic in Oxford, which add to the difficulties of people trying to get about the city.
But I wouldn’t expect any sympathy from the self-satisfied Mr Mitchell, who seems to have the good fortune of being physically healthy and therefore able to draw the thousands of pounds in remuneration and expenses that he gets every year from being a councillor.
It would be nice if council tax payers felt they were getting value for money.
