Arthur Titherington, a war veteran, PoW camp survivor and former Witney town mayor, has died in the John Radcliffe Hospital.
He campaigned tirelessly to get an official apology from the Japanese government over the treatment of prisoners during the Second World War.
Mr Titherington, 88, had been a prisoner of war for over three years after the fall of Singapore.
