THE Radcliffe Arms in Jericho, Oxford, has a long history of providing nourishment and entertainment to thousands of customers over the years.

The picture dates from about 1923 when the pub’s darts team was about to leave in a charabanc for an outing.

The landlord at that time was called Thompson.

The pub, in Cranham Street, was opened in 1872 by the NBC Brewery and later taken over by Morland, of Abingdon, then Fullers and Ushers.

One of the first landlords, in 1880, was Charles Bowell, while 10 years later, the licensee was Mrs C Harding.

After the Second World War, regulars enjoyed a traditional sing-song around the piano in the lounge every Sunday.

The pub was named after Dr John Radcliffe, the eminent physician, who also gave his name to the Radcliffe Camera, the Radcliffe Infirmary and later the John Radcliffe Hospital.
