I WRITE regarding the letter from Tom Holden, commenting about David Youd’s letter on police appearance.

Both David and I served in the former Oxford City Police, a small but well-disciplined force.

We knew that smart turnout leads to pride. This in turn led to efficiency – something sadly lacking in today’s poorly-led police forces.

I agree they want the police to turn up and deal with problems, but force policy and the CPS add to problems. Political correctness does not help.

David and I had more than 70 years of combined service, so I believe we know what we are talking about. I am, however, sure Mr Holden meant well.
