I was so saddened to read the article about the Gap project which is to close.
What a terrible loss to the homeless people of Oxford.
I worked at the Gap when it first opened and know most of the staff who are now employed there. They have a very dedicated director who fought tirelessly for the homeless, setting up a very small place for them to sleep in St Clement’s.
From there he built up The Bridge project in Iffley Road. This project was a safe place for young homeless people and they were given the respect they deserved by a team of dedicated staff.
The director then created the Gap. It saddens me that Louise Mendonca states that the Gap has been deemed less effective than other projects in the city.
What they had there was so very special. People were treated with respect and given hope.
It will never be replaced. What a sad loss.
