A HEADY mix of history, sport and fun were on offer at a series of free events in Abingdon.

The town’s historic buildings and homes were opened up to the public for Heritage Day on Saturday, while Abbey Meadows was filled with family entertainment for the town’s Fun in the Park event.

Deputy mayor and heritage day organiser Alastair Fear said he was delighted with the number of people who got involved.

He said: “Heritage Day was all about showing the interesting buildings in Abingdon and opening as many as we could.

“We also had morris dancers and MG cars in the market square – both of which are part of our history.”

Deputy town clerk Sandra Hill, who organised the Fun in the Park event, hailed it as the best in 11 years.

She said: “It went extremely well.

“At one point we had nearly 4,000 people there.”

She added: “Everybody who helped did so as volunteers.he added: “It was absolutely fabulous.

“The weather was fantastic, and we finished off with glorious sunshine and a tug-of-war between the adults and the children. Of course the children won!”

Clubs and organisations provided activities in return for a stall, and a highlight was an assault course set up for children by staff from Dalton Barracks.

Town mayor Duncan Brown said: “The event always goes very well as there are a lot of people in that part of town.

“There were fairground rides and lots of stalls run by community groups.

“We also had performances by bands and dance troupes, and the winners of Abingdon’s Got Talent.”
