I am afraid your report of the proposed new Dean Court community centre (August 30) does a grave disservice to the many local people who made the Dean Court Social Club a success for more than half a century. The report said the club started in July 2006. At the fundraising barbecue and fun day on Bank Holiday Monday I got talking to John Hughes, who came to play darts at the club in the early 1950s, and remembers it fondly as a thriving concern.
John can’t remember the year, but it was shortly after he was demobbed from National Service in Kenya, fighting the Mau Mau, so it was probably not long after 1952. Whatever the year, it was a long time before 2006.
We look forward to our new community centre being a similar source of good memories.
