The Guideposts Trust is a Witney-based charity providing direct services in the community for people with or recovering from mental health issues, for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, for people with a learning disability and for children with special needs.
It is the charity’s work with children with learning and physical disabilities that is the focus of its first Family Fun Day being held on Sunday, September 12, at Eynsham Hall, North Leigh, near Witney.
The Fun Day is taking place to raise both awareness and funds for local Guideposts Fun Clubs, which give children with severe disabilities the chance to take part in activities and games, to go on outings, to learn and to above all have fun!
Many of the children looked after at the Fun Clubs, which run in Witney, Abingdon and Henley have the most severe and challenging disabilities and require medication every day to be able to live. Their lives and their happiness are totally dependent upon others to care about them and to love them. The Fun Clubs give parents much-needed respite and children the chance to do things they would never normally have an opportunity to do. For children with degenerative illnesses, regular daily activities, especially swimming, help ease their physical discomfort and pain and enable them to retain physical skills for as long as possible.
Outings into town, activities like swimming sessions and visits to attractions such as Drayton Manor and LEGOLAND give children of all ages, opportunities they would not normally have.
Sunday’s event runs between 11am and 4pm and features craft stalls, local produce, classic cars and bikes, bouncy castle and children’s rides, musical entertainment, a bar and a BBQ to make it a great day out for all the family with the cost being just £5 per car.
David Beck, head of fundraising at the Guideposts Trust, said: “The Fun Clubs are a vital part of the charity’s work in the local community and we are very much looking forward to welcoming people to the Fun Day.”
