A CANDLE left unattended started a blaze in Horspath, Oxford, during the early hours today.
Fire crews from The Slade fire station in Headington were called to Prospect Park, off Collcutt Close, at about 4.20am and found smoke and flames pouring from the front of the home.
When fire crews arrived, the blaze was already being tackled by the resident, who was using a fire hose provided on the site.
Crews quickly brought the fire under control and the occupier was taken to hospital after suffering the effects of breathing in smoke.
A spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire Service said a smoke alarm alerted the resident, who escaped the blaze to fight the flames from outside.
