WITNEY traders received a boost when the town staged its first fun day dedicated to attracting more visitors.
More than 100 businesses took part in Saturday’s event, which included a treasure hunt, live music and street entertainment.
Janette Reed, chairman of Witney Independent Traders’ Association and owner of Cotswold Kids, said: “On the whole it went well.
“It was the first time we’d done it and a lot of traders around the town volunteered to help.
“Children enjoyed themselves and all the music was well received.”
Children and shoppers were also treated to a bouncy castle, a carousel and a Where’s Woolly treasure hunt, which started at the Methodist Church and was run by the town’s children’s centre.
Ms Reed added: “This was about raising the profile of Witney as a whole.
“During the treasure hunt people went around looking from shop to shop and hopefully what they saw will stay in their subconscious.
“They will know there are lots of businesses in the town and will come back.
“It’s about showing people the variety of what Witney has to offer – Next that has just opened in Woolgate, more businesses have been let in the High Street and there are new businesses expected in Marriott’s Walk in the run-up to Christmas.
“It’s all very positive stuff for Witney.”
The event also gave young musicians from Witchwood School of Rock the chance to play to the crowds.
Bands TenTwentySix, Weatherwax and The Reaper, featuring youngsters aged seven to 17, performed on Church Green.
The Reaper bassist Joe Landles, 13, from Milton under Wychwood, said: “It was awesome.
“It’s been a great event to take part in and it was amazing to play to everyone here, especially a crowd that size.”
The School of Rock is opening a Witney branch later this year to help youngsters pursue their rock dreams.
It will hold an open day on Saturday, September 25.
