TENT dwellers living on a former Victorian rubbish tip have moved from their campsite after the landowner obtained court orders to evict them.

People have been living in tents at Aston’s Eyot, an overgrown beauty spot on the banks of the River Cherwell and River Thames at the bottom of Jackdaw Lane, East Oxford, for months.

There have been at least five tents spread across three camps, and at one camp there was a portable cot, mirror and makeshift bath.

It is not known exactly how many rough sleepers used the site or when they slept there.

The land is owned by Christ Church College and the college obtained a County Court court order to evict the homeless dwellers.

But treasurer James Lawrie said he did not think it would definitely draw a line under the problem and homeless people could return.

He said: “Some months ago at the request of the police we did obtain court orders to evict some people who were living and trespassing in Aston’s Eyot.

“I can’t say categorically if it will solve the problem but we always seek to discourage them.

“If we are requested again to serve them with a court order we will consider it.”
