I WRITE with reference to the letter by David Youd (Oxford Mail, August 18), regarding police uniform. I agree it was always strictly recognised and enforced to be correctly dressed at all times, including approved head gear.

I do remember in the distant past, one female police officer was reproached by her sergeant for failing to wear her regulation hat at 6.30am the previous day.

A retired senior officer had observed this female officer failing to wear her police hat while walking a short distance from her police vehicle and had duly reported it.

This is only one of many changes no doubt. Today, it seems many police officers are among the public hatless.
