Margaret Godden (Oxford Mail, letters, August 23) would hold up fig leaves to cover this cut-loving Coalition Government.
Far from being ‘clapped-out’, the Labour Party would have continued with its progressive policies, including the expansion of nursery education, giving an entitlement to a place for every three-year-old, a system of Sure Start children’s centres providing support for thousands of families with 0-3-year-olds, and the largest school building programme since Victorian times, now ended by the Con-Dem Government.
And what is the Con-Dem Government offering? Among other policies that will destroy our economy, centralisation of the schools, massive cuts in every sector of public expenditure, with thousands of people losing their jobs.
And what for? A referendum on the Alternative Vote voting system, which their bedfellows the Tories have said they will vote against!
No wonder the people of Oxford East increased Andrew Smith’s majority and no Lib Dem MP was elected in the whole of Oxfordshire.
Liz Brighouse, Leader of the Labour Group, Oxfordshire County Council, Oxford
