THE Coalition Government does not appear to have got off to a good start, if the measure they are taking to combat the massive deficit is to cut some of the more beneficial things the previous government put in place.

One of the items being proposed to be abolished is Asbos (Oxford Mail, August 13).

The introduction of Asbos has helped to reduce crime, wanton criminal damage and antisocial behaviour on the Rose Hill estate.

I welcome Peter Wilkinson’s proposal, as chairman of the tenants and residents association, to invite Home Secretary Theresa May to see for herself how the estate has changed.

Of course, there is still a lot of work to be done, but it would be a shame if the improvements to be seen on the estate are undone.

I admit that when Asbos were first introduced, I was very much against them as I felt the young would misinterpret them as another ‘them and us’ confrontation.

I felt that if better facilities catering for their needs were made available, order could be restored.

I am still of the same opinion, but as there are no signs of any new facilities being provided, it is essential that the threat of Asbos is retained to keep law and order.

I cannot see what there is to be gained by abolishing them.
