CHILDREN enjoyed a day out at the seaside – without leaving rainy Oxford.
The beach-themed fun took place at the Museum of Natural History and the neighbouring Pitt Rivers Museum, in Parks Road.
The event was inspired by Tracy Chevalier’s historical novel Remarkable Creatures.
The book tells the story of Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot, who hunted for fossils on the South Coast. The museum houses some of the fossils they found, and based its activities on 19th-century seaside holidays – activities including dinosaur excavating and creating fossils from plaster.
The Pitt Rivers featured arts and crafts, with the children able to make puppets they could then use in a show. University museums head of volunteering Joy Todd said: “These are all activities that you can have fun with, and hang learning on.”
She added: “It’s particularly nice when you hear people say that they have found fossils themselves.”
