A WOMAN attempted to smuggle almost £100,000 worth of drugs into the country at Heathrow airport, a court has heard.
Sarah Hughes, 32, of Samuelson Court, Banbury, was arrested by UK Border Agency officers on Sunday after they found 30 kilos of cannabis and a small amount of heroin in some luggage.
She had arrived at Heathrow’s terminal three on a flight from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, and was later charged with two counts of attempting to import controlled drugs.
Hughes appeared before Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was remanded back into custody of the UK Border Agency.
She is due to appear at the same court on Tuesday, October 5.
Although Hughes has not yet entered a plea, she is likely to be dealt with at Isleworth Crown Court.
Peter Avery, of the UK Border Agency’s criminal and financial investigation directorate, said: “Our officers are on constant alert to keep drugs, firearms and other banned substances out of the UK.”
Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drug smuggling should call the agency hotline on 0800 595000.
