AN OXFORD chemist says he fears for the safety of his family and staff after a spate of threats and attacks on his business.
Pupinder Singh Ghatora, who runs Woodlands Chemist, in Botley Road, has endured several days of death threats, attempted arson attacks and vandalism.
Now the 32-year-old has been forced to take on a private security firm.
Police said forensic experts were analysing evidence from the incidents.
Last Friday and Saturday nights, the shop’s locks were vandalised three times, which cost Mr Ghatora hundreds of pounds to repair.
He said: “A black Mercedes has been seen driving up and down the road outside with four black men inside. They stopped my employee and said ‘you had better watch your back’.”
On Saturday, white spirit was poured through the letterbox of the pharmacy and then a threatening note was stuck to their van.
On Sunday, used matches were found around the shop door and Shah Khan, 20, who works for Mr Ghatora as a dispenser, was followed and threatened.
Since then, Mr Ghatora has been driving his staff home and has hired a security guard to watch the shop overnight.
Shutters and floodlights are also being installed, at a cost of thousands of pounds.
Mr Ghatora said: “I’m scared. I’m scared for the staff who walk home alone and for our families, in case we’re followed back to our homes.
“If this shop is set on fire, it’s not just my livelihood. There are three girls who live upstairs and the whole street could go up.”
He added that he was disappointed with the help he had received from police, who have attended a number of the incidents.
He said: “We know who’s doing this and where they live, but the police say everything is just coincidental. But I have been here five years and have never had anything like this until now.”
He added that the response from the community, however, had been overwhelming. Customers had come forward to offer their help and passed out leaflets warning residents to be vigilant.
Mr Ghatora said: “The people here treat us like family, because we’re straightforward and honest. It brings tears to my eyes.
“But now we’re being terrorised and attacked.”
He added: “If this carries on, then we won’t be here much longer. I will be bankrupt and my livelihood will be gone.”
Police spokesman Chris Kearney said: “We’re taking the matter very seriously and officers are investigating the incidents.”
“Botley Road is patrolled regularly and it will be part of our patrol plan to stop by frequently and check everything is OK.”
