AN unplanned year off from her studies for Harri Samson, from Headington, in Oxford, ended up proving an inspiration to make the grade.

Three years ago, she was on a placement at Woodeaton Manor School, near Oxford, as part of her health and social care studies, when the course was closed.

But the school, which caters for children with emotional and social difficulties, was impressed with her work and offered her a job as a learning support assistant.

And the 19-year-old said her experience working with the pupils gave her the drive to return to Oxford & Cherwell Valley College and get the two A-Levels she needed – an A in Law and an A in psychology – to study for a degree in social work at Oxford Brookes University.

“I wouldn’t have been able to succeed without that experience,” she said. “I grew up a lot, so I was ready to start A-Levels.

“I still go back to Woodeaton and visit and I have helped with some of the students’ work. I really loved the experience. I would hate a job where you just turn up. I want to do something that benefits people.”

Mum Julia Samson said she had been more nervous than her daughter yesterday morning.

She added: “I couldn’t eat. I’m absolutely thrilled for her and chuffed to bits.”
