FOR Oxfordshire fans of hit TV show Glee, unfortunately, it was all a joke.
Managers at FM107.9 have been stringing along listeners since Monday, claiming the radio station would be relaunched as Glee FM and would play nothing but songs from the American show about a school singing group.
Newspapers and websites around the world, including Hollywood celebrity blogger Perez Hilton were taken in by the prank.
The story appeared in the New York Post and made waves as far away as Australia.
But last night the radio team, also the brains behind Oxford’s Jack FM, came clean and admitted the new station would be called Glide FM.
Targeting 20-something Oxford professionals, particularly women, presenters will play songs from well-known TV series and film soundtracks from the past 10 years.
The first breakfast show, hosted by Sophie Bruce, went on air today at 7am.
Glide’s programme director and Oxford Mail Sassy and Single columnist Sue Carter said: “The publicity it has generated around the world has completely amazed us, so we thought we’d better come clean before we get in any trouble.”
