FAIRGROUND rides, hip-hop dancers and food from across the world is expected to draw thousands of people to the heart of Oxford’s largest estate for a much-loved annual celebration.

The Leys Fair is returning for another year on Saturday, September 11, and the popular community festival is expected to attract more than 2,000 people.

Organisers are putting the finishing touches to plans for this year’s spectacular and are urging families to make sure they keep the day free.

The fair is a chance for young people from the estate to showcase their talents and skills to revellers.

Natalie Huckin, 42, is organising the event this year, replacing Paul Isaacs, former organiser and manager of Blackbird Leys Youth and Community Centre, who has left his post at Oxford City Council.

Miss Huckin, who lives in Blackbird Leys, said: “It has been a bit more stressful this time because for me it’s all quite new being in total charge.

“We try to keep as much as we can free for the local community.

“This year’s theme is about what is going on in the local community and reinforcing the community spirit.

“There will be lots of community groups with stalls.

“It’s a relaxed atmosphere and a little bit ‘carnival’.”

Among the attractions on offer, revellers will be able to learn how to Samba, sing along with the Blackbird Leys choir, and enjoy a variety of bouncy castles.

There will also be displays from KC’s School of Dance, cheerleaders the Strawberry Fayre Majorettes, and singing and dancing by teenagers from the Leys Community Development Initiative.

Police and firefighters will be attending too and food from across the world will be on sale.

Miss Huckin added: “The event is something very positive that happens on the estate.

“I’m not aware of any negative press at the moment, but there has been in the past and I think it’s good to bring everyone together in the great outdoors.

“You can catch up with people you haven’t seen for a while.

“I do think there is a strong community spirit in Blackbird Leys.

“I have lived here all my life and I like the fact you can walk around and see familiar faces – everywhere you go you know someone.”

Miss Huckin said good weather would lead to a good turn out and had her fingers crossed for sunshine.

The event will be held in the field behind Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, Pegasus Road, from noon to 5.30pm. Entry is free.
