THE victim of a brutal attack in Oxford six years ago last night branded her attacker’s two-year jail sentence “pathetic” and spoke of her fear of meeting him again.
Nichola Wollage-Joyce, 39, contacted the Oxford Mail after discovering ex-boyfriend Michael Slinn – who fled to Thailand in 2005 after being found guilty of beating her up – had been given just 24 months behind bars.
Slinn attacked her outside Bar Baby in Cowley Road in 2004, before dragging her along the street.
An Oxford Crown Court jury found him guilty of GBH in February 2005, but the 46-year-old fled to Thailand while on bail awaiting sentence.
Police caught him in November last year, and he was extradited to Britain earlier this year. He had been working as a diving instructor in Phuket.
Finally on Wednesday – more than five years after going on the run – the 46-year-old was sentenced.
Last night Ms Wollage-Joyce said she had been told by paramedics she was only one hour from death after the attack because of fluid building up around her heart. Her injuries included a punctured lung and broken ribs.
She also revealed Slinn had been in contact with her while he evaded justice, boasting about his new life in Thailand.
Ms Wollage-Joyce said: “I feel so angry with the situation – the first I knew of it was when I saw the Oxford Mail on Saturday.
“Michael Slinn is a very dangerous man who could have killed me that night.
“I almost wish he was still in Thailand because he was a long way from me.
“Now he is back, and I am terrified he will find me again. I am already organising a new security system at my house.”
Judge Christopher Compston jailed Slinn for two years at Oxford Crown Court, which he admitted was an “exceptionally low amount of time.”
The judge said Slinn –a former policeman in his native Canada – was now a “broken man” after a horrific time on remand in a Thai prison while he awaited extradition.
But Ms Wollage-Joyce, who had been going out with Slinn for seven months when he attacked her, said it was a pathetic sentence.
She said: “I can’t believe the judge was taken in by his sob story.
“Justice has not been done. He could be out of jail in a matter of months.
“He is very lucky that he did not face a manslaughter charge instead of just GBH, because he came very close to killing me.”
Pictures posted by Slinn on his Facebook page show he travelled freely in Europe while on the run.
Ms Wollage-Joyce, a chef, said: “He must have thought he had got away with it, and got lazy. Slinn would send me messages on Facebook but say I was trying to make contact with him. It never made sense.”
