WORK is under way on a £400,000 project to improve Oxford’s Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre.
The sports centre in Pegasus Road will have a new cycling spin studio, improved changing facilities and reception area when builders pack up their tools in October.
The centre is staying open while work is carried out and builders, who began work last month, are trying to keep disruption to a minimum.
The project has been welcomed by local residents, who say the centre is a key facility for the community.
Leisure centre manager Robert Wood said: “The team at the centre is extremely excited about the improvements and can’t wait to have the work completed.
“The work started on July 12 and is progressing really well. There will be very little disruption while we carry out the work, and the gym, sports hall and classes are all running as normal.
“When finished, we will have a brand new spin cycle studio, with more than 15 spin bikes and a superb music system.
“These spin classes are great fun, with a qualified instructor taking each class and providing motivational support.
“Everyone should look out for the date of a forthcoming open weekend to celebrate the opening, at which people will be invited to come and try the new facilities.”
Bob Timbs, the city council’s executive member for leisure partnerships, welcomed the investment.
He said: “The improvements will really enhance the whole centre and provide a better facility for residents.”
City council spokesman Louisa Dean said the project was being funded by the council, from savings created when the management of its leisure facilities transferred to Fusion Lifestyle.
Kelly Chandler, of KC’s School of Dancing, which is based at the leisure centre, said: “I do think it’s needed. Hopefully, it will bring good things my way as well.
“Since my dance school has been running there, it’s brought lots of people into the leisure centre.
“It’s a fantastic place and the staff are so helpful.”
Blackbird Leys parish councillor Gordon Roper said: “I think it will be a vast improvement and I’m sure it will be greatly used.
“I think it’s one of the most needed facilities in the community.
“It’s a good focal point for people to meet. I think it’s taking over from the community centre.”
