The Royal British Legion has condemned as “disgraceful” a delay to efforts to shore up Abingdon’s tilting war memorial.

The town council’s £60,000 plan to repair the memorial could be at risk because of a halt to work on resurfacing the High Street, as the county council looks to cut spending.

The final phase of the £3.4m Abingdon Integrated Transport Strategy, which included the resurfacing work, has been halted.

Town councillor Julie Mayhew-Archer said the project was “integral” to the project to stabilise the war memorial.

Stan Bradford, chairman of the Abingdon branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “It’s poor considering that we have waited all these years to get it right.

“Everybody is going to suffer cutbacks but to take it from a thing like that is absolutely disgraceful.

“If the lads whose memory it was built for had not given their lives, the people making the decisions would not be in a position to do it.”

Lesley Legge, leader of the town council, said: “There are things we still feel are very urgent and need to be done.”

County council spokesman Owen Morton said: “The budget will be very tight for the coming years and all schemes will need to be assessed and prioritised accordingly.”
