Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault in Oxford last night in which a man's jaw was broken.

At about 11.30pm, a handbag was stolen from Door 74 in Cowley Road. Police said a 36-year-old man who witnessed the incident followed the suspect and was assaulted in Union Street.

Det Con Simon Hannam said: “I appeal to anyone who witnessed the assault to contact police. The victim sustained a broken jaw and was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment.”

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and is in custody.
