THE rector of an Oxford church last night pledged to renew its efforts to stop lapdancing at a neighbouring club in order to protect “God’s gift of sex”.
At Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, St Ebbe’s Church lost its appeal against the city council’s decision last December to allow the club, in Pennyfarthing Place, to stage lapdancing. The church now faces a £12,000 legal bill.
New legislation adopted by the council in April means the Lodge gentleman’s club – previously known as Thirst Lodge – will have to apply to renew its licence at the end of the year.
Under the new powers, lapdancing clubs will not be approved in residential areas, near schools, play areas, shopping centres or places of worship.
Church administrator Dr Lucy Bannister said: “When the club has to reapply for its licence, as an interested party, we will make a representation that we do not want lapdancing there.”
Rector the Rev Vaughan Roberts added: “We wouldn’t be keen to see such a club anywhere, because lapdancing degrades God’s gift of sex.”
Council leader Bob Price said: “The new regulations will allow us to specify where sex establishments would be appropriate. However, any licensing application will get a fair hearing.”
No-one at the club was available for comment.
