SUPPORTERS of Didcot Hospital were urged in 1990 to ‘buy a brick’ to build a new physiotherapy wing. The original department was built to accommodate wounded troops rescued from Dunkirk during the Second World War and badly needed to be replaced. The first picture shows Fran and Roger Childs, from the appeal committee, and Alistair Welch, right, from the hospital’s League of Friends.
Didcot Lions Club ran an appeal for Christmas gifts in 1989, to be distributed to needy people in the town. Club members Fred Excell, left, and Tom Carter are seen in the second picture receiving a gift from Julie Hurley and her 18-month-old daughter Sophie.
Didcot Rotarians are seen in the third picture shopping in 1976 for babies’ nappies, billy cans, Scout knives, night lights, ladies‘ underwear, teddy bears and a whole lot more. More than 60 items were packed into two boxes ready to be shipped or flown to any part of the world where there was an emergency or disaster.
