AS PRIVATE hire drivers in Oxford, I and my colleagues have become increasingly concerned about problems at certain junctions in Oxford, where we feel action is needed.
These are:
1. The zebra crossing at the corner of New Road and Castle street. Who in their right mind would put a zebra crossing on a corner? There are bus stops very near the crossing and if buses are parked at the stops, it makes it very difficult for drivers to see pedestrians crossing the road. I have had three near-misses at the zebra crossing. It also does not help when pedestrians cross the road without looking. Why was a decision made to have a zebra crossing at that particular spot?
2. The traffic lights for turning right into the railway station from Frideswide Square, when facing towards Botley Road. They change to green and after five seconds go back to red, not giving enough time for taxis or cars dropping off passengers at the station. Why is so little time allowed?
3. The traffic lights at the junction of London Road and Windmill Road, in Headington. They do not give enough time for four vehicles to leave Windmill Road to go into London Road or Old High Street. This also applies for traffic coming out of Old High Street going towards London Road or Windmill Road. There is a potential for an accident, due to the minimal amount of time given to vehicles coming out of both these junctions at the same time.
