Banbury will become the focal point of the international art world when the town’s auctioneers Holloway’s holds its regular Antiques and Fine Art Sale on Tuesday, June 29.
With an important collection of Chinese porcelain and pictures by renowned artists among the 580 lots on offer, the auction house is preparing to take bids from all over the world via the internet and on the telephone.
If past experience is anything to go by a significant number of items will be sold to foreign bidders and shipped to locations all around the globe from the Parsons Street sale room.
There has been much pre-sale interest in a collection of Chinese porcelain from the 17th century Kang Hsi dynasty, which has been consigned for sale by an Oxford vendor.
The 13 lots include a number of large blue and white jars and vases decorated with flowers, animals and figures — all estimated to sell for between £2,000 and £5,000.
Art lovers have been attracted to another collection of modern European and American oil paintings and drawings, featuring eleven pictures by the English painter John Bratby (1928-1991).
One of the highlights is a large 48 by 36-inch canvas titled Raccoon coat and Salute and silver satchel which features Venice as a backdrop — a city that appears in many of his works.
This has a sale estimate of £2,500 to £3,500.
Next Tuesday’s sale starts at 11am and lots can be viewed at the saleroom on June 25, 26 and 28 or by logging on to the website: www.hollowaysauctioneers.co.uk
Dog devotees may wish to make a note in their diaries for the next sale in September (date to be decided), which will include a large number of paintings and drawings of Lucas and Sealyham terriers, which belonged to the late Miss Anne ‘Jumbo’ Frost of Eydon — a well-known promoter and breeder of the animals.
