With regard to using chippings to resurface roads (Oxford Mail, June 18) I completely understand the concerns of motor bike riders, however, being a car driver, I think it is a very cost effective and quick method of improving the road surface.

I think the problem lies, not so much with the chippings but more with the idiots who completely ignore the 20mph signs and drive at ridiculous speeds over the newly laid road surface.

I, to my cost, experienced this last week on the newly-resurfaced Launton Road in Bicester.

I have to travel this road twice a day for work reasons and on Monday of last week a van came tearing down the road towards me doing at least 40 mph. As a result, two chippings hit my windscreen, one causing a large chip and the other a large crack about 18in long, leaving me having to replace the windscreen and having to pay £75 excess.

I think there is a problem with the aftercare of this method of resurfacing our roads and that is the amount of time the loose chippings are left before being cleaned up.

But I think the biggest problem is the complete disregard for other road users of drivers who completely ignore the speed limits.
