Sir – Carterton is a great place to live but I feel the residents of are being let down, neglected, overlooked, ignored by various companies or councils and, maybe, others with personal interests?
Sainsburys are willing to come to the Business and Retail Park but were put on hold till an outline planning application is submitted for the market site in the autumn.
This means months of waiting for revised applications, waiting for planning committees/WODC and town council, building work, etc. All of which means nothing will happen in the foreseeable future — perhaps at least a year.
With the closure of Spar I would have thought Sainsburys to the east of town would have fitted in well with the new RAF housing which should shortly be getting under way.
Aldi are supposed to be coming to Carterton and, whilst not exactly a supermarket, would at least provide additional local choice. Nothing appears to be happening apart from issues over a few trees and, once building commences, it will be months before we have Aldi as an alternative.
So we are in limbo and likely to remain that way for a long time. Which may explain why my wife and I often go out of town (Witney, Swindon, Abingdon) to expand our choice and perhaps get better value. I suspect many others do the same.
Residents of Carterton please make your wishes known or you will end up with what you have at the moment. Very little.
Alan Smith, Carterton
